Kadence – Editing the Author Box & Info

Example of an author box on a single post

The Author Box is a handy feature that displays the author’s name, bio, and social links at the bottom of your blog posts. Here’s how to turn it on (or off) and customize what appears.

Enabling or Disabling the Author Box

  1. From your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Customize > Posts/Pages Layout > Single Post Layout.
  2. Scroll down until you find the setting “Show Post Author Box?”
  3. Toggle the switch on to display the author box, or off to hide it.
  4. You'll see there are 2 styles, "normal" and "center". Choose the style you prefer.
  5. Lastly, you have the option to enable or disable "Use Author Archive Link?" – When enabled, users can click on the author name and it will take them to the author archive page, which displays all posts created by that author.

Customizing the User/Author Info

To edit the information that appears inside the author box (refer to the example at the top of this article):

  1. From your dashboard, go to Users > All Users and select the user you want to edit.
  2. Name: Add your preferred name in the Nickname field, then choose that nickname in the dropdown under “Display name publicly as.” – This what will display in the author box and for the post author meta.
  3. Bio: Add your short bio under Biographical Info. This will appear right below your name.
  4. Profile Picture: WordPress uses Gravatar for profile images. Next to “Profile Picture,” click the link that says “You can change your profile picture on Gravatar.” You’ll need to create a free Gravatar account using the same email address connected to your WordPress login, then upload your photo there. You don’t need to fill out anything else on Gravatar.
  5. Occupation: Under Extra profile information for author box, fill in the Occupation field (for example: “Founder & Designer”).
  6. Social Icons: Still under Extra profile information for author box, add your social profile links (Instagram, Pinterest, etc.) in their corresponding fields.

Profile Picture Not Showing Up?

If your photo isn’t displaying, make sure avatars are enabled in your WordPress settings:

  1. From your dashboard, go to Settings > Discussion.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and find the Avatars section.
  3. Make sure the box for “Show Avatars” is checked.
  4. Under Default Avatar, choose “Gravatar Logo.”

Once those settings are saved, your profile image should appear in the author box.
